The Mediterranean Solar Plan in a more active phase

Launched in July 2008 by France within the framework of the Union For the Mediterranean (UFM), the Mediterranean Solar Plan (MSP) is now in a more operational phase.
This Plan aims to build by 2020 a solar power capacity of 20 GW spread among the Mediterranean countries.
CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) is the main technology used. CSP

functions with mirrors that ensure the convergence of the solar radiation. The total cost of the MSP is estimated at Euros 80 billion, partially financed by the carbon funds.
The renewable energy imported in the European Union could be taken into account in the target established by the EU energy climate package whose objective is to reach by 2020 20% of

renewables in the EU energy system.
Over the next couple of years, the UFM will set up an action plan in order to determine pilot projects (70 projects were already received) and to set up the necessary framework.
The adopted projects will be presented during the next meeting of the UFM to be held in March 2009 in Monaco.
